Introduction
We are seeking a detail-oriented and organised Customs Clearing Clerk to join our automotive logistics division. The successful candidate will be responsible for handling customs clearing processes and documentation for imported and exported motor vehicles and automotive parts, ensuring full compliance with South African Customs regulations.
The role requires strong administrative ability, accuracy, and the capability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Job description
- Manage end-to-end customs clearing processes for motor vehicles and automotive parts
- Oversee the preparation, verification, and submission of customs entries and related documentation
- Ensure accurate tariff classification, valuation, and HS code application
- Monitor customs compliance and ensure adherence to SARS regulations and company policies
- Liaise with SARS Customs officials, shipping lines, freight forwarders, transporters, and internal stakeholders
- Handle customs stops, inspections, detentions, and queries efficiently
- Monitor shipment status and ensure timely vehicle releases and deliveries
- Investigate and resolve customs discrepancies, penalties, and compliance risks
- Support and guide junior clearing staff and assist with operational training where required
- Ensure all customs documentation and records are accurately maintained and audit-ready
- Identify process improvement opportunities to enhance operational efficiency
- Manage high-volume clearing operations while ensuring deadlines are consistently met
- Prepare operational and compliance reports for management
Minimum requirements
- Grade 12 / Matric
- Diploma or Degree in Clearing & Forwarding, Logistics, Supply Chain, or related field
- Minimum 5–8 years’ experience in customs clearing, preferably within the automotive industry
- Extensive knowledge of South African Customs legislation and procedures
- Strong understanding of tariff classification, valuation, rebates, and customs compliance requirements
- Experience handling vehicle imports/exports and automotive parts clearing processes
- Proven experience managing high-volume customs entries and operational deadlines
- Experience working with customs clearing systems and freight platforms
- Advanced Microsoft Excel and reporting skills
